It's the same story I've been tracking since 2022, from one more angle.

QT (Quantitative Tightening)

The period when a central bank lets the assets on its balance sheet run off, instead of buying new ones to replace them. In practice, money leaving the system rather than entering it. The opposite is balance sheet expansion, fresh money coming in. The switch between the two changes how easily liquidity moves through every market, not just through banks.

The signal

The Fed's balance sheet turned higher

Since 2022 I've been watching a single chart: the Fed's balance sheet.

It fell from 7.69 trillion dollars, in early 2024, down to 6.54 trillion on 3 December 2025.

That day it stopped shrinking. Today it's at 6.76 trillion.

It isn't a small shift. It's the kind of inflection that moves money through the whole system, not just through banks.

One question stays open.

Is this a one-off event, or the start of steady growth, like 2012-2014?

Either way, the direction matters more than the speed.

The first place the effect showed up wasn't stocks. It was oil.

The pattern

Why no one wants to spend, even with money

Every serious crisis in the last twenty years has something in common.

It isn't just that people run out of money. People who HAVE money stop wanting to spend it.

Fear of spending is more contagious than a lack of money. Both stop the same machine.

In 2008-2009, US inflation fell below zero. Not because prices dropped naturally, but because no one was buying.

It happened again in 2014-2015, shorter, but just as real. I was working on an oil rig at the time, in the middle of an oil and gas crisis, and I got laid off.

2021-2022 didn't bring deflation. Inflation was actually at its highest in forty years. But the same fear showed up differently: Bitcoin lost 76.6% of its value, the S&P over 25%.

All three of these windows land seven years apart. The Shmita year, which I've written about at length here.

I'm not insisting on the mystical part of the cycle. I'm insisting on the part you can check: every time, liquidity pulled back, then came back, and whoever kept accumulating during the fearful stretch came out ahead.

Oil

An exact double since December

Oil bottomed on 16 December 2025, at 55.27 dollars.

The same month the Fed's balance sheet stopped shrinking.

I don't think that's a coincidence. Extra liquidity finds its way into commodities too, not just stocks.

By 7 April, the price had climbed to 112.95 dollars. Almost an exact double.

It has come back down since, and today sits at 83 dollars.

The 87-92 area stays the major resistance I wrote about on 29 July, so I won't repeat it here.

What matters now is the underlying direction, not the level on any given day.

It crossed 39 trillion in May. Three months for one trillion, the fastest yet.

The pace is the story. Each new trillion arrives faster than the one before it.

Interest alone on that debt will cost the government 1 trillion dollars this fiscal year, 3.3% of GDP.

That's before a single dollar goes to anything else.

A government paying that much just to service debt has one real lever left when conditions get tight: lean on the central bank.

That's the structural reason behind the Fed's balance sheet turning higher in December. Not the only one, but one that doesn't go away.

Nothing new.

The September-November window now has a second independent signal behind it, through the Fed's balance sheet and through where the debt trajectory is headed.

We aren't changing the positioning on this alone. We wait for confirmation, we don't front-run it.
