Range

The state where price moves sideways, tightly, for months on end. The opposite, no range, is the decisive exit from that sideways stretch, usually out of an RSI at an extreme. Inside a range you accumulate slowly and you force nothing. Once the market breaks out, position size ends up mattering more than the direction you think you have guessed.

Nothing happens in the middle of the cycle. That is where people give up.

Bitcoin was 39% below its high of $126,000 and had stalled around $77,000. On the screen it looked ugly.

Except the money had not gone anywhere.

The middle is neither the cheap beginning nor the euphoric end. It is the part where nothing moves.

I work with a framework I call the Smita moments: the points where the market starts over. 2001, 2008, 2015, 2022. The next one somewhere around 2029. In 2026 we sit right in the middle of them.

The middle is where most people give up. Not because they lose money. Because nothing happens for long enough to wear their patience out.

And the capital really is there. Stablecoins, the dollars parked on exchanges ready to buy, were at a record, above $320 billion. Waiting. Not gone.

We have seen this film before. In 2018 Bitcoin fell 84% and everyone declared it dead. That was the same boring middle, exactly like now. Whoever mistook the quiet for an ending got out right ahead of the move.

Bitcoin has only two states. The mistake is confusing them.

One chart, two words written on it: range and no range. No target, no prediction.

Range is sideways. Price turns in a tight loop for months, and the boredom pushes people into pointless activity.

Inside a range, the hardest decision is to do nothing. And that is exactly the right one.

No range is the other state. The market leaves the sideways stretch and moves decisively, usually out of a weekly RSI pushed to an extreme. At that point it stops testing your patience and starts testing your attention.

The weekly RSI hit 27 in March. Lower than at the December 2018 low, when it was 29. It has climbed toward 37 since.

That tells you that you are in a move. It does not tell you where the move goes. I keep two patterns from past cycles in mind. If this resembles the end of 2018, the bottom is already in and the rise follows. If it resembles 2022, we stay around here a while longer, with one more low toward 50-55k, but met by a rising RSI, a divergence.

Either way the practical conclusion is the same. Once the market leaves the range, volatility jumps, moves turn big and fast, and a mistake costs double.

This looks like 2016, not 2022. The difference sits under the price.

The market looks at a correcting Bitcoin and sees another 2022. A bear that is only getting started.

Under the surface something else was happening. The pieces were turning one at a time, not all at once.

The difference between 2016 and 2022 is not in the price. It is under it.

Appetite for the small altcoins bottomed first, back in October. The macro gauge lagged, but it has turned as well.

The copper/gold ratio bottomed in the spring and was roughly 28% higher by the time that edition went out. It has gone further since, more than 35%. Copper rises when the world believes in growth, gold when it gets scared. The ratio simply shows what the market is paying for right now.

In 2022 liquidity was draining out of the whole system. That was a real bear. 2016 was a correction without a crisis, with money rotating underneath before the next cycle. That is what I see now: rotation, not collapse.

I kept half my money in cash for ETH, for the second part of the year, and on this drop I have already started to accumulate. Gauges that turn give you the slow direction, not the exact day. Which is why the only thing you really need right now is patience.

Three editions, the same underlying idea. Today's price tells you the least about where you actually are.

What mattered was where we stood in the cycle, which state the market was in, and what was moving under the price. None of that was visible in today's candle.

And the thing that was needed was not a new indicator. It was the patience to sit inside a market that, on the surface, was doing nothing.
