The consensus wants an October bottom. A green August says otherwise

Everyone now says October 2026 brings the market bottom.

It's the same loud, unanimous consensus as "the ATH only comes after the halving", a few years back.

But 2026 is one of the rare years with a green August, and that history says something different from the consensus.

When everyone agrees on the same thing, I'd rather look at the data than the opinions.

An August in which Bitcoin closed positive, against the end of July. It's rare. Since 2014 it has happened only in a handful of years, because August is usually a weak or flat month for Bitcoin. This year was green, and strongly so, plus 25.1%.

If you listen to the market right now, the message is unanimous.

October brings the bottom, then we go up.

I've seen this consensus dressed up differently before.

A few years back, everyone was sure the ATH only comes after the halving. Loud, unanimous, and wrong then.

I'm not saying October is definitely wrong now. I'm saying something everyone repeats the same way is worth checking, not swallowing.

So let's look at what Bitcoin actually did in August, September and October, year by year.

The history

September is usually weak, October positive

The table below is simple: Bitcoin's return in August, September and October, since 2014.

Green positive, red negative.

Since 2014, October has been positive in 9 of 12 years. September, far more often weak.

I wrote about October at length last week, I won't repeat it here.

What interests me today isn't October on its own, it's what happens when the year starts with something rare: a green August.

Because 2026 just did exactly that.

What September and October did after a green August

Take from the table only the years where August was green.

Three finished years remain: 2017, 2020 and 2021. Plus 2026, in progress.

In all three finished cases, September closed red, and October strongly green.

September around minus 7% each time. October between plus 28% and plus 48%.

It's not a rule. Three cases is a small sample, and I say so clearly.

But it's exactly the reverse of what the consensus believes now: not an October bottom, but a weak September followed by a positive October.

It fits what I was tracking anyway, which is one more reason not to fall in love with it.

There's one more signal that says the same thing, from a different angle.

Who leads

LINK moved first, Bitcoin followed

Look at LINK and Bitcoin over the last few weeks, one under the other.

LINK started the move first, every time. Bitcoin came after, closely.

I saw exactly this in October 2023, when LINK led and Bitcoin followed.

LINK leads, Bitcoin lags behind. And once they sync up, corrections usually follow.

CRV did the same thing, the same structure, with its own lag.

I don't read this as an immediate buy signal. I read it as confirmation that the move is real, but close to the point where the two align.

And when they align, what historically follows isn't the vertical continuation, it's a pause or a correction.

It ties straight into the rest of the report: a weak September, exactly the month I'm expecting pullbacks.

That leaves the question of where we are now, in the month that decides.

September is in progress, flat for now

As of today, September 2026 is at plus 0.9%.

Basically flat, the month has barely started.

My marker isn't an October bottom. It's a weak September, then a positive October. The reverse of the consensus.

What would break the pattern, and tell me to set this read aside: a September that closes strongly green, or a red October.

Either one would mean this year isn't behaving like the other green-August years.

Until then, I look at a weak September as normal, not as the start of the collapse everyone's waiting for.

How we're positioned

The broad framework stays the one from last week, but one thing has changed for me.

From now on, I treat dips on altcoins purely as buying opportunities.

That means spot accumulation, not rebalancing between positions.

The reason is the signal that liquidity is coming back into the rest of crypto, not just Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Bitcoin and Ethereum stay the majority of the portfolio, and a weak September doesn't make me sell, it makes me add on the dips.

Conclusions

The consensus says October brings the bottom. The green-August history says otherwise.

In the three prior years with a green August, September closed red and October strongly green.

It's a small sample, three cases, not a rule set in stone.

But it's exactly the pattern I'm tracking, not the one everyone repeats.

September is in progress. A weak September wouldn't be a surprise, it would be the norm.
