Bitcoin falls, the rest of the market rises. Why this isn't altseason

Bitcoin lost 2% this past week, and two small coins rallied almost 20%. Crypto group chats called it altseason immediately. The data says something else.

I don't believe that, and the data doesn't back it either.

Capital rotation

The moment fresh money enters the market and moves methodically from one asset to another, holding each level it conquers before moving on. It shows up as sustained volume and prices that don't give most of it back. A few days of trading into an old resistance, followed by a pullback to half the gain, is not rotation. It's short-term trading.

The gap

Bitcoin falls 2%. Ethereum, only 0.7%

Since 8 August, Bitcoin dropped from 64,905 to 63,485 dollars.

A 2.2% decline.

Ethereum lost only 0.7% over the same window.

The gap looks small on paper. On the chart, it's a month and a half of direction, not one week.

The ETH/BTC ratio is up 16% from the 6 June low.

Not a one-week move.

It's the direction of the last six weeks, and this week is just the latest step in it.

The gap between BTC and ETH wasn't the loudest part of the week, though.

The pump

What actually moved

Two small coins, CRV and CVX, rallied as much as 19% and 15% in just three days.

Both straight into old resistance zones.

Three days of trading into an old resistance is not a capital rotation. It's a trade.

By today, the gain on both had been cut in half.

A real rotation looks different. Fresh capital comes in, holds the level it conquered, then moves on.

What happened this week is short-term trading, not new money entering the market.

Liquidity doesn't skip rows. It moves through Bitcoin first, then Ethereum, and only at the end through the rest.

Bitcoin has to finish its own job: form its bottom, here or toward 51,000-55,000, then move through 90,000-93,000 and 108,000-115,000. Levels I'm watching, not targets.

Only after it moves through them does it make sense to talk about fresh money in the rest of the market. I don't think that comes before 2027.

That's why Bitcoin and Ethereum stay the majority of any serious portfolio. What we sold from CRV and CVX this week followed the same logic: take the profit where we don't have long-term conviction.

The more interesting part this week isn't the small coins, it's what the big money shows.

The ETFs

Five good weeks, then a pause

Ethereum ETFs had five straight weeks of net inflows.

The best one, the week of 3-7 August: 245 million dollars, nearly all of it through BlackRock's ETHA.

Five weeks of money coming in shows confidence. One week of money leaving doesn't cancel it out.

The week of 10-14 August, the streak broke. Small outflows, under 3 million dollars.

That same week, Bitcoin ETFs lost 390 million.

Only Solana funds kept net inflows positive.

I don't read this as a change in thesis. It's the first pause after a month of accumulation, not a reversal.

$245M → -$2.3MNet ETH ETF flows: the best week (3-7 August) versus the most recent one (10-14 August).

That leaves the part that actually matters for us.

How we're positioned

The allocation stays the one from last week's report: Bitcoin and Ethereum the majority of the portfolio, cash for further steps, older altcoins under 3% each.

We didn't add to CRV or CVX this week. What we had there from before, we sold into the rally, we didn't hold it further.

If ETH ETFs return to net inflows for two straight weeks, that's the signal that matters, not one price spike on a small coin.

Conclusions

Bitcoin fell 2.2%, Ethereum only 0.7%. The ETH/BTC ratio is up 16% from the June low.

CRV and CVX showed how fast a trading move can double, and how fast it can get cut in half.

ETH ETFs had five good weeks, then a small pause. It doesn't change the thesis.

Nothing this week was altseason. Bitcoin has to finish its own job first, the rest comes much later.

Does the ETH/BTC ratio hold above 0.029, or does it turn back toward the June low?
